The Soloing Rogue: Melee

Soloing Rogue: Melee

Updated 20 June 2011

This build is great for soloing, especially for the daily reputation grind. It works great for questing but it doesn’t have the best DPS output in the early stages. It really comes into its own at around the point you get Reprisal from the Bladedancer tree. The overall design of this build is that Assassin brings stealth capability and overall damage bonus, Riftstalker provides survivability and healing, while Bladedancer does the bulk of the damage output.

Bladedancer (32) / Assassin (21) / Riftstalker (13)

Some of you may recognize this build. It is a variation from Vox’s Whirling Dervish Build. My original spec here put more points into the poison bearing abilities in Assassin, however, I determined later that they didn’t add enough to the build to be worth the points – especially since I wasn’t using any Assassin abilities other than the weapon buffs.

As you level, put your points first into Riftstalker. Your goal is to get to 13 points in Riftstalker asap. The next goal is to get 2 points in Bladedancer for Quick Strike. After that, the goal is to get 21 points into Assassin (make sure you get 2 in Silent Footsteps as you go). At this point, you should be looking at 21 Assassin, 13 Riftstalker, 2 Bladedancer. This makes you a questing machine because you can bypass unneeded enemies with unlimited stealth and heal yourself by stacking 5 combo points before killing a mob. For now, your spam macro looks like this:

#show Keen Strike
cast Puncture
cast Quick Strike
cast Keen Strike
suppressmacrofailures

Your build should look like this: Assassin (21) / Riftstalker (13) / Bladedancer (2)

Note: The link immediately above shows 2 points in Quick Reflexes. This is optional – the final build will be putting the first 5 points into Blade Finesse, but as you level the additional dodge could be more beneficial than the extra attack power. Feel free to put your first 5 into Reflexes and respecialize when you are comfortable with losing the extra dodge.

Keep in mind, at this point your dps output is fairly low and when you get into questing in the 30s, it can get a little tough. Remember to use Incapacitate a lot to split your pulls and try to remember it’s okay to use 2-3 point finishers to get a little burst before building up your 5 point combo heal at the end. Don’t blow your combo points to kill a mob unless you don’t need the heal.

From this point on, you start dumping points into Bladedancer to up your dps. Add Reprisal at 6 points (place it in your macro above Quick Strike). The magic number is really 16: Precision Strike (add Precision Strike into your macro above Reprisal). Once you get these abilities, your dps really starts to skyrocket. Your bread and butter macro at level 50 looks like this:

#show Keen Strike
cast Reprisal
cast Puncture
cast Precision Strike
cast Quick Strike
cast Keen Strike
suppressmacrofailures

Against difficult enemies, keep False Blade and/or Guarded Steel up. Even against easy enemies, keeping False Blade is good because much of the Bladedancer dps comes from abilities that react to dodge and parry. It’s helpful to keep Baneful Touch and Dauntless Strike up for additional dps, but when you are soloing it’s not really necessary. In a group, you won’t need the defensive finishers up; just maintain Baneful Touch and Dauntless Touch and finish with Compound Attack (aoe, use Final Blow if aoe is not acceptable). Your aoe capability is fairly limited but Twin Strike is your aoe combo builder; you can use Rift Disturbance as well but watch your agro. Pop Dancing Steel for big packs; otherwise you’ll do better dps if you stick with single target attacks.

Remember to keep your weapon buffs up. Use Leeching and Lethal Poisons when soloing, Lethal and Virulent when grouping. Also, don’t forget your dexterity (6 points BD) and endurance (4 points RS) buffs. You can burn strength scrolls with this build when soloing for a little extra AP and parry.

This build is from the pre-Storm Legion days.

My favorite current melee builds in my casual RIFTing is the assassin/riftstalker and nightblade/riftstalker. You can find the builds in the official forums: http://forums.riftgame.com/game-discussions/rift-guides-strategies/class-guides/rogue-guides/
